Japanese Push the Safety Envelope

Posted by Catfish as Tech, humor, survival

Actual statistics indicate that street crime in Japan is on the decline, nevertheless sensational media has made the issue of personal safety a hot topic in Japan. In answer to the heightened concern for safety, Japanese inventors have created a genre of safety products that may seem totally off the wall to some, but are gaining popularity in Japan. Tsukioka, a 29-year-old fashion designer, for instance, has designed a skirt that pulls out to cover the wearer in a vending machine disguise. A version for children disguises the wearer as a fire hydrant! If you aren’t already aware, the streets of Japan are literally lined with vending machines that sell everything from space age snacks to used school girl panties (I kid you not), so disguising oneself as a vending machine seems logical, albeit in the hide-under-a-cardboard-box logic of cartoon world. Check out the link for an interesting discussion on the interplay between fashion and personal safety in Japan.

Nobel Prize Winner claims Black people ‘less intelligent’

Posted by Catfish as BS, politics, rant, science, survival

James Watson, Nobel Prize winning scientist for discovering the DNA sequence is caught is a whirlwind of controversy after recent racial remarks describing Black people. In speaking about the state of affairs in Africa, that he was,”“inherently gloomy about the prospect of Africa [because] all our social policies are based on the fact that their intelligence is the same as ours - whereas all the testing says not really.”. He further elucidated his baffling point by saying “people who have to deal with black employees find this not true”.

It just boggles the mind…one of the men who helped discover the DNA sequence, someone who has had an intimate look into the the unique potentials that can arise through the interplay of one’s nature and one’s nurture, can come to such an ignorant conclusion. Further defending his stance, Watson states,“there are many people of colour who are very talented, but don’t promote them when they haven’t succeeded at the lower level”… “there is no firm reason to anticipate that the intellectual capacities of peoples geographically separated in their evolution should prove to have evolved identically. Our wanting to reserve equal powers of reason as some universal heritage of humanity will not be enough to make it so”.

Wowzerz. Maybe Kramer and Imus need a roommate?
