Last summer, me, my dog and a couple of friends set out to go hiking for the day. We hadn’t planned ahead on what trail we were going to embark upon and ended up picking one somewhat randomly. We got to the trail and it was a beautiful autumn day, the leaves starting their color show, the air still warm but crisp, and without a care in the world. Fast forward 8 hours and we found ourselves desperately moving forward trying to follow the white trail markers painted on the trees as the sun was setting. What we hadn’t realized before starting the hike was that the trail we were on traveled around 3 separate reservoir lakes and was close to 13 miles long! Needless to say, we ran out of sunlight and had to stop. We were stuck in the middle of the woods without flashlights or water. Luckily, I was able to use my sense of hearing to slowly crawl towards a spring near to where we were forced to stop hiking…so we had water, but the one thing we didn’t have was fire. As it got darker and darker, it soon became impossible to even see the faces of my comrades sitting just a a couple feet away from me. We could have camped out, slept under the stars, and just waited for the sun to rise and start up again on the trail but the complete and utter darkness brought on THE FEAR and one of my friends dialed 911. The cops came out on ATVs and after 3 hours or so were able to locate us and then led us back out through another several miles worth of forest…had one of us known how to make fire, we might not have had to call the cops, and subsequently get our names published in several local newspapers as the sity slickers who got lost hiking in the woods..ugh…
So for all you would be hikers, check out how to make fire.
