Hyphen population waning, boarding on extinction!

Posted by Catfish as books, humor

That’s right Hyphen’s are slowly becoming extinct, or at least according to the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. The 6th Edition of this massive dictionary has eliminated the hyphens from nearly 16,000 words! Former hyphenated words such as pot-belly and leap-frog now appear sans hyphen. The reason? It seems people today we just don;t have the time anymore to reach over, disrupt the tippy tap tap tapping of our assuredly extremely important email, and press the hyphen key.

My thoughts? If we don’t need the hyphen key anymore, let’s get rid of it and replace it with a pizza button. Just press the pizza button, and moments later, pizza will be delivered right to your door. Now, that’s technology.

Book Mooch

Posted by Catfish as Tech, books

If you are anything like me, over the years you have slowly assembled a mountain of books that you haul with you from apartment to apartment, each time the burden requiring more and more steps up the stairs. Every time this happens I start thinking about opening an ebook service, but then once I get situated and have all my books set out in my bookshelves for my guests to see and peruse, I remember why I like having hard copies of the books I read…TO SHOW OFF HOW BIG MY BRAIN IS! The problem is though, my brain must not be THAT big because every time I move, I always end having more books than I do space to show them off. So these books end up gathering dust in an attic or a basement until I move again. Call me selfish, but I just don’t want to give these books away, and I surely don’t want to trade them in for pennies each…but ALAK I have stumbled upon a new service that let’s you trade in your books and receive new books over the internet.

It’s called Book Mooch, and it works by users posting books they have that they no longer want. Other users can then request your books and have you mail them the books. You get points on BookMooch for doing so and can then spend these points to have someone else do the same for you! Very cool idea and I definitely plan to try it out…first book to go “Zen and the Art of Making a Living” (I’m unemployed again and that book hasn’t done me a whip of good…oh wait, someone from BookMooch might be reading…I mean, this reference manual has provem invaluable to me on my journey to transform my work into play…yeah that’s the ticket.)

BOOKMOOCH

P.S. - to m brother who might be reading this post…this is perfect the perfect way to clear the basement out of all of your books so I can move back in!

Jumpin’ Jack Flash Earth

OK so this post has nothing to do with Mic Jagger or the Rolling Stones, but I just couldn’t help myself. What it’s really about is an amazing map of the planet that utilizes satellite imagery and aerial photography images to make the coolest map of Earth that I have come across yet!
